Feather Fantasy

I know the Painted Surface category at IQF was basically created for Hollis Chatelain, but I actually think this one is my favorite in that category:

Feather Fantasy

But then I kind of have a thing for peacocks, anyway. -- Incidentally, I'm not saying that the category was created for Hollis' exclusive use or anything - but I do think it was created because of her, and because of the "controversy" over whether what she was making was a quilt at all. (People, it has multiple layers. It has quilting - an awful lot of quilting, for that matter. It's clearly a quilt, painted or pieced or not.)

Quilt above made by Kim Bradley of Sydney, Australia; from the judged show (category: Art-Painted Surface) at IQF 2007.

I agree that Hollis' quilts are quilts! I mean, whole cloth quilts are traditional quilts w/o piecing. No one says they're not quilts. We can find old quilts w/ painting on them. I don't understand why there was a controversy at all.

A few years back there was a breathtaking Hollis quilt of some nomads that I felt should have one best of show (but didn't). I'm glad she got recognition this year. (Although I confess I liked the nomad quilt better than this year's quilt).

Yes, exactly - they're wholecloth quilts. I don't really see what the question is, except that they're different. There's always some people who don't like different. (I heard her talk a couple of years ago and she said she didn't know when she started making these quilts that they were anything different at all, because she was still in Africa and didn't have much contact with other quilters.)

And I'm pretty sure I know the one you're talking about - the blue nomads. (Here.) I like that one a lot, too.

That's the one! Thanks for the link. It's good to see it again. I really liked a Hollis quilt with a Hawaii (I think) theme that I saw at Houston IQF. I liked it even more than the one she one the best-of-show with. Didn't know if you've seen it. I will be posting it on my blog in a little bit.
