Watercolor excess

I tend to avoid talking about quilts I don't like, but... well, I won't say I hate this one, but it's a bit much, isn't it?

Oh my. This one fits in the category of "technically masterful, but just doesn't do it for me." I did a blog post last year about reasons I can not like a great quilt. This one probably fits reason #1, too grandmotherly. Nothing against grandmothers.

I thought maybe this was a case of not knowing when to stop - imagine it without that last border, and it wouldn't be quite so overwhelming. But then again, a lot of people who enter quilts at IQF are going for overwhelming, really. So it could go either way.

I don't know that I think of watercolor quilts as grandmotherly, especially. This was probably made 10 years ago, and back then, watercolor was sort of cutting-edge. But as somebody said in comments, a few entries back when we were talking about watercolor, not all of them have aged too well. And I'm afraid this is a good example. (Although actually, I don't think even though I took two pictures of it in 1998, that means means I loved it then, either. I think I took them because my mother was all into watercolor at the time and I was getting lots of examples for her.)
