Kindergarten quilt

My aunt's three grandchildren all got a "kindergarten quilt" - I guess to take to school for naps, would be the idea, right? (You can tell I don't have kids, can't you?) Anyway, this is a really cute (and easy) idea for a kids' quilt - although actually my aunt said she got the idea from one of my mom's quilts, which has an entirely different color scheme.

Oriental 9-patch

My aunt made this top out of some Asian fabrics she'd been collecting. It's out of this book: 9-Patch Pizzazz: Fast, Fun & Finished in a Day - which is a great book if you have a large print that you don't know what to do with. You come up with a very simple but nice-looking quilt.

Update: It's nice that there are people around who remember things better than I do! Jerianne remembered that this quilt was in our guild quilt show in 2004, and the pattern information was still up on the website. It is called "Ever Vigilant" by Barbara Baume, and it was in Quilter's Newsletter in July 2002. (Come to think of it, that is the year that my mother was registration chairman, so her information should all be correct!)

Poetry

My mom bought several of those packets of pre-cut 5" squares that Moda puts out, and two of them were April Cornell's Poetry line from last year. I didn't quite know what to do with them, so at retreat I started sewing them into half-square triangles. I tried to maximize the contrast, although of course some still have more contrast than others - still, from what I slapped up on the design wall, it seems promising.

I also found the big floral on clearance at Virginia Quilter (in the 54" width, too) and ordered a yard. I figured that's enough to put a nice-sized border on this with room to spare. I think there's 80 of these triangles, and I trimmed them to 4-1/4", so this is not going to be all that big.

So remember when we were looking at this quilt of my mom's and trying to figure out what the pattern was? Well, apparently this is the pattern - I found it in her stuff. They also have a (Tripod) website - here.

After my grandmother died, my aunt asked me if I wanted a couple of old quilts, and I said, "Sure." I think nobody else wanted this because it's not very pretty close up - it's too loud. But doesn't it look great from a distance?

Why I will (probably) never go to Paducah

I have expressed my views on this subject before so I won't go through all that again. Anyway, the link above is to KarenD's entry about her trip, and here's the pictures she did post. You can see the winners on AQS's own site, and I was especially pleased to see that the Galveston quilt guild's lovely group quilt won a ribbon in the Group Quilts category. (Actually I have to admit that I don't currently belong to this guild; I have belonged in the past and I keep intending to join again but so far I haven't gotten around to doing it! I am a terrible procrastinator.)

I really am most jealous of the fact that Karen got to go to Hancock's of Paducah and root around in the back room for bargains. That is something I might truly do something drastic in order to get to do.

Oh, and perhaps I should point out that you can buy a book of pictures of the AQS quilts.

Retreat time

This is one thing that I worked on at the quilt retreat this weekend. The centers are a Kona Bay panel, and they are directional, which you may or may not be able to tell since they are sort of turned every which way in this picture. (I was just trying to figure out how well this whole idea was going to work.) I bought the panel on eBay last year, because I thought it would make good centers for the indigo log cabin I have been planning to make since the dawn of time - or at least for several years. As tends to happen when you collect fabrics like this, though, I had way more dark indigoes than I did light ones. I think I have enough, though. Barely.

I put up a picture of the April Showers quilt, so I thought I'd put up March Winds, too, just for completeness. My mother did a number of wallhangings out of that book - here's the Thanksgiving one and there's also an Amazon link there to the book itself, although I don't know how hard it would be to get hold of these days. Anyway, I particularly like this one.
