Papillon

I've been looking at my "interesting" page again, and obviously flickr does not equate interestingness with page hits, because the picture with the most hits - this one - is several pages in. This is a really lovely piece and everything - it's one of my favorites, really - but that still doesn't tell me where all those hits are coming from. I'm curious, and so far flickr is not giving me the answer, darnit. It's a mystery.

And in unrelated quilty news... my sewing room is taking shape, at least a little bit, and there has been ironing and cutting of fabric taking place there, and I made a visit to Office Depot earlier and now there is a new lamp in it, because it was way too dark in there. There's no overhead light, and I had a couple of lamps (and my mom's small Ott-Light) but it wasn't nearly enough. The new lamp is only 18 watts, but it puts out quite a lot more light than the 13-watt Ott lamp does. I put a better bulb in one of the other lamps, too, and between the two it doesn't look so gloomy in there any more. (Oh, and it was $20 cheaper than on the website, too - I wanted instant gratification and so I didn't figure I was getting the lowest price in the world but it's sort of nice to know it could've been worse!) (And who knew that Office Depot sold Ott Lights, anyway?)

Here's one I had forgotten about that I really like. There's a picture of the full quilt here. I'm not entirely sure about how this one was made - it looks like it might be a combination of machine embroidery and more traditional methods. What do you think?

Added: I looked at the big picture and now I'm not so sure about the machine embroidery. I think maybe it's more traditional applique and less machine embroidery than I originally thought - although the plant names at the bottom of the blocks may well be machine embroidered. Everything else appears to be appliqued, pretty much.

Update: It's nice that there are people around who remember things better than I do! Jerianne remembered that this quilt was in our guild quilt show in 2004, and the pattern information was still up on the website. It is called "Ever Vigilant" by Barbara Baume, and it was in Quilter's Newsletter in July 2002. (Come to think of it, that is the year that my mother was registration chairman, so her information should all be correct!)

This is a detail picture of Mom's Roseville quilt. This is just the center, which has (and I remember this from when she was making it, it impressed me so much) over 300 pieces in this block alone. I think that makes this quilt an heirloom.

So the quilt I brought home last weekend was this one. The center applique block is one of Sue Garman's patterns - I think maybe it goes with the "Mama Said" series of patterns. But my mom changed the hair-color on the girls to represent my sister and me, because I always had dark hair growing up, and my sister was blonde. (I think the rest of the blocks were from a kit, although I'm not 100% sure about that. The fabrics are mostly by Robyn Pandolph and Sandy Gervais.) My mom also wrote the sweetest inscription on the label, something about memories of her little girls, which I don't remember having seen before at all. It almost made me cry.

Buttermilk Farm

I keep bringing quilts home - I have no idea what I'm going to do with this, but it's too pretty to just let sit in my mother's closet. "Buttermilk Farms" or maybe "From Buttermilk Farms" is the name of the book it's from - I'm not sure if this pattern has a different name.

I was looking through Mom's books today - the one this pattern is from was there, which is what reminded me of it. She had quite a lot of quilt books, and I made a "keep" pile and a "give away" pile - the keep pile was quite a lot smaller, which will make my husband happy. A lot of her books were applique, for one thing, and since I don't do applique there's no sense in taking any of those, even if I do like to look at them!

Darlene Christopherson quilt

Several years ago, Darlene Christopherson was working on a sequel to her book A Perfect Union of Patchwork & Applique and my mom was going to a bee that was fairly near where Darlene lives, and she got roped into making a sample quilt for the new book. I don't think I've ever put a picture of this quilt up before because of that; I was intending to wait until the book came out. But I think if it hasn't by now, it probably isn't going to. In any case, it's a lovely quilt.

30s fabric

My mother got on a huge thing for 30s fabric for a while. I have never been that much of a fan of it myself, but I have to admit she did make some really nice things out of it. The border on this quilt is particularly nice.

Small Elly-inspired piece

I'm trying to remember the story behind this little quilt. Mom took an Elly Sienciewicz class (am I spelling that right?) a number of years ago - maybe 8 or 9 years ago. She started this in the class, but what I'm not sure about is which part of this they did in class. It may be the little dimensional flowers in the corners.

(She's also been collecting green glass for several years, you can see a couple of pieces there.)

This is a piece by Brenda Henning of Bear Paw Productions. I took this when she was speaking at our guild last year. Near as I can figure out, it seems to be based on the patterns in this book.

I really like her stained glass pieces, especially for the holidays. She said they use a lot of Clover bias tape, though, so keep that in mind if you think about doing one for next year!
