Redwork

I haven't gotten the picture of my mom's bluework quilt from the show online yet, but here's the redwork one which was also entered:

Redwork

Redwork done by Billie Standley and Gloria Marquis; pieced and quilted by Billie Standley from an Alex Anderson kit.

My mom and her friend Gloria went on a bus trip to New England in 2003, and during the trip they did all this embroidery. I was with her when she bought this kit; it may have been in Brenham earlier that year. This has an extremely light batting in it - we were thinking it might be Thermore.

Christmas Past

Unknown IQF quilt, 2003, originally uploaded by Mellicious.

I found another holiday-ish quilt that I don't think I've posted before, so here it is. Maker unknown, from IQF 2003. Probably based on a Currier and Ives print. (And that's not the name of it, in the title. I just made that up because that's what it looked like to me!)

Past IQF award winners: Unknown 2003 blue ribbon

Unknown IQF quilt, 2003

Didn't Matisse do some drawings that looked like this? I seriously doubt that Matisse made the quilt, though, and unfortunately I don't know who did. And Quilts Inc does not seem to have their past award-winners lists where they're easy to come by. This one does conveniently have a date on it, so we can be relatively sure it was from 2003.

Past IQF ribbon winners: Unknown

Unknown IQF quilt, 2003

Maker unknown. Although since it won a blue ribbon it shouldn't be too hard to find out, should it? I will have to poke around and see if I can find the past lists. From IQF 2003. (Seems to have been done using some interesting photo-manipulation techniques. See the big version.)

Past IQF ribbon winners: Windswept

Windswept

Quilt above made by Nancy Dickey of Magnolia, TX. From IQF 2003. (The ribbon appears to be third place. I love this quilt, but I know from long experience that the judges don't use the same criteria I do.)

There's a list of finalists up on the IQA website. A lot of what you might call the usual suspects are there - i.e., those past ribbon winners I've been featuring here lately. But there's always some new faces, too.

Are You Human?

Are You Human?, originally uploaded by Mellicious.

Made by Mary Fisher (from her special exhibit). From IQF 2003.

I thought of putting this one up because I found a link somewhere to Mary Fisher's website. There's some neat stuff in her fiberart gallery. Definitely worth a look.

Hawaiian-style

Unknown IQF quilt, 2003, originally uploaded by Mellicious.

I suppose this wouldn't be considered an "authentic" Hawaiian-style quilt, would it? I mean, it ignores several of the rules as I understand it - chiefly, that the applique is supposed to be all one piece, and thus all one color, as well. This one has, what, two main pieces of applique? The center is one piece and the edges are another, as far as I can tell. And of course the pink flowers each add more pieces. But that said, I really like it a lot. The end result is beautiful.

The quilt festival prize-winners are posted, by the way. I didn't look at the pictures since I'm going this weekend and I don't want to be "spoiled" - but there appear to be pictures of all the award-winners already there.

Enticement
